Recognizing Reprexain Abuse: Signs and Side Effects

Reprexain is one of many opioid prescription drugs designed to treat patients experiencing short-term (10 days or less) moderate to severe pain. Opioids are known for their powerful pain-relieving abilities, as well as their high potential for abuse and addiction. In fact, they are one of the most abused drugs in the nation. For this reason, our luxury rehab is sharing more on the signs and side effects of Reprexain abuse and how we can help those battling addiction get sober.

Can You Take Hydrocodone and Ibuprofen Together?

While this might seem like an out-of-the-blue question, you can take ibuprofen and hydrocodone together – because that’s exactly what Reprexain is. Reprexain is a combination medication made up of both hydrocodone bitartrate and ibuprofen. Hydrocodone is an opioid medication with several uses, including its use as an antitussive (cough suppressant) and narcotic analgesic agent for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. Studies indicate that hydrocodone is just as effective for cough suppression and equally as potent as morphine for pain relief.1 Ibuprofen makes up the other portion of Reprexain. This is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat mild to moderate pain. It is available over the counter up to certain dosages and may also be prescribed at higher dosages for individuals with conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and juvenile arthritis. Together, ibuprofen and hydrocodone are prescribed as Reprexain for individuals with severe pain that require both pain relief and anti-inflammatory support. As effective as this medication is, however, it is important to avoid misusing it, which includes taking it without a prescription or taking higher doses than prescribed. Doctors prescribe a Reprexain dosage according to several unique factors, so it is important to take the drug according to the doctor’s directions.

Reprexain Side Effects

The hydrocodone in Reprexain works by attaching to opioid receptors in the central nervous system (CNS) and other parts of the body. This changes the brain’s reaction to pain and blocks pain signaling from the body to the CNS. Ibuprofen works to keep fever and pain under control, as well. Reprexain medication is normally taken orally once every four to six hours as needed to manage pain. Unfortunately, while this medication has proven effective for many patients, it does not come without its side effects. Common Reprexain effects on the body include:

  • Constipation
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

More serious side effects of Reprexain include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Coma
  • Confusion
  • Extreme drowsiness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Seizures
  • Shallow breathing
  • Slowed heart rate

It’s important to keep in mind that because Reprexain contains the opioid hydrocodone, adverse effects like sedation, drowsiness, and respiratory depression are more likely to occur if the medication is misused. In severe cases, when higher-than-prescribed doses are taken, an overdose may even occur. If you suspect that someone is overdosing on medication, call 9-1-1 immediately, as brain damage, coma, and even death may occur.

Does Reprexain Get You High?

Yes, Reprexain can get you high if you misuse it. Typical forms of prescription drug abuse include taking higher doses than prescribed, taking the medication without a prescription, taking it in a way it is not meant to be used, and mixing it with other substances. Unfortunately, due to their sedative and euphoric effects, opioids, and opioid-containing medications like Reprexain are commonly misused for a high. Opioids like Reprexain produce a high because of their impact on the CNS. In addition to pain relief and relaxation, these drugs also activate the reward system in the brain as well as increase dopamine. This neurotransmitter can also be referred to as the “happy chemical,” as it is linked to improved mood and pleasure. Over time, the body becomes accustomed to this artificial surge of dopamine. However, long-term prescription drug abuse – especially that of an opioid – can lead to a severe and life-threatening substance use disorder. While recovery is possible, opioids are strong enough to require professional treatment for the highest chance of long-term sobriety. Our residential addiction treatment in Palm Beach offers both medical detox and various therapy programs to help clients recover both physically and mentally from substance abuse.

Signs of Reprexain Abuse & Addiction

People who are addicted to opioids like Reprexain may still hold down their jobs and other responsibilities, maintaining the appearance that they are stable at work and home. However, over time, the addiction usually leads to serious problems in all areas of their life, to the point where it is too obvious to hide. When a person becomes dependent on or addicted to Reprexain, they will continue to use it despite any negative impact it is having on their health and life. Common signs of Reprexain abuse include:

  • Regularly taking it in a way not intended by the doctor who prescribed it, including taking higher doses or mixing it with other substances
  • Taking opioids “just in case,” even when they are not in pain
  • Mood changes, including excessive swings from euphoria to agitation
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Borrowing medication from others or “losing” medication so they can get more prescriptions
  • Lying about ailments to get prescriptions
  • Going to multiple doctors for the same prescription to have a “backup” supply
  • Poor decision-making, including behaviors like driving under the influence or anything else that puts themselves or others at risk

If you notice these signs in a loved one, do not wait to get them opioid addiction treatment. Our facility offers luxury substance abuse services to ensure clients are safe, comfortable, and getting the support they need.

Help for Opioid Abuse

Unfortunately, there is a general misconception that prescription drugs are safe because they are prescribed by a medical professional, but this is not true. Every substance comes with dangers, especially opioids and opioid-containing medications like Reprexain. If you or someone you care about is battling Reprexain addiction or abuse, do not wait to call. Our prescription drug addiction treatment can make long-term recovery possible.   For more information about our Florida luxury drug and alcohol rehab, call Seaside Palm Beach today at 561-677-9374.   Source:
